Researchers at the University of Tsukuba, Japan, have identified and described a previously unknown dinosaur species found in Uzbekistan that appears to be at the top of the food chain of its time. These apex predators were much larger than even the famous tyrannosaurs, writes Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
The study was published in the journal Royal Society Open Science, and a summary of the study can be found on the University of Tsukuba website. Paleontologists from Japan have described not only a new species, but also a new genus of dinosaurs.
Fossils have been found in the Bisect Formation in the Kyzyl Kum Desert in Uzbekistan. Two separate evolutionary analyzes were carried out, which helped to classify the ancient inhabitant of these places. Scientists found that the creature found belonged to a widespread group of predators – Carcharodontosauria.
