At the meeting of the sixth session of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the seventh convocation, the senators approved the draft law “On changing the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus”, BelTA has learned.
“The initiative to make changes was expressed in the appeal of the deputy corps to the head of state about the need to amend the current version of the Constitution on the introduction of a single voting day. This initiative has matured through the holding of dialogue platforms, appeals to public receptions of citizens, written appeals,” Commissions of the Council of the Republic on Legislation and State Construction Sergey Sivets.
According to him, the introduction of a single voting day is convenient for voters and beneficial for the state from a financial point of view. “Since any electoral campaign is costly in its essence,” the senator noted. “The President supported the initiative of the deputy corps, the formalization of this initiative took place within the framework of the spring session. On June 25, a draft law was adopted on amending the Constitution, according to which a single voting day was introduced. and, accordingly, the powers of the deputies of local Councils of Deputies were extended until the elections to the National Assembly of the eighth convocation. That is, this is the end of 2023.”
