In January-December 2021, Ukraine increased the foreign exchange costs for imports of coal and anthracite by 46.7% compared to the same period last year – up to 2.48 billion dollars.
Relevant data are posted on the website of the State Customs Service.
According to the customs, 19.5 million tons of coal were imported to Ukraine during the reporting period, and 16.95 million tons (+ 15%) a year earlier. The largest suppliers in this period were Russia, the United States and Kazakhstan.
Imports of coal from Russia in monetary terms in 2021 amounted to 1 billion 54 million dollars. (62%), from the US – 494.6 million dollars. (19.8%).
Ukraine imported $ 253.4 million worth of coal from Kazakhstan. (10.2%). Coal worth $ 195.3 million was imported from other countries.

Ukraine has been experiencing an acute shortage of thermal coal since the summer of 2014, when hostilities in the east of the country completely lost control of the part of Donbass where most of the mines are located.
In 2020, Ukraine reduced foreign exchange expenditures on imports of coal and anthracite by 39.6% to $ 1.69 billion.
