Uzbekistan’s silkworm breeding sector is set to produce 24,000 tonnes of silkworm cocoon this year, up from 22,800 tonnes in 2021, Uzbekpaksanoat (Uzbekistan’s Silk Industry) Association said
It said that the Central Asian country planned to increase the production to 31,400 tonnes by 2026. In order to achieve this target, more than 6 million mulberry seedlings will be planted across the country to create a silkworm food base.
Uzbekistan will increase the volume of silk products from $87 million in 2021 to $191 million by 2026, the company said.
Over 3.4 million tonnes of cotton had been harvested in Uzbekistan in 2021. Productivity increased by an average of 6.3 centners per hectare. The volume of annual exports amounted to about $3 billion. The country is the world’s 8th largest cotton producer and the 11th largest exporter.
