Early presidential elections in Turkmenistan will be held on March 12, 2022. This is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the assistant to the chairman of the Turkmen Central Election Commission Bezirgen Karaev, as well as the state news agency TDH.
The day before, on February 11, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said at a meeting of the Khalk Maslakhaty (upper house of parliament): “I support the idea that the road to public administration at a new stage in the development of our country should be given to young leaders.” Earlier, observers suggested that at this meeting a decision could be made on the transfer of power to the president’s son, Deputy Prime Minister Serdar Berdimuhamedov. However, the head of state did not make such direct statements. It was not even said what exactly would be done to “make way”.
On February 12, Karaev, in response to a question from Russian journalists, clarified: “In accordance with the instructions of the President of Turkmenistan, the country’s Central Election Commission has begun preparations for early presidential elections to be held on March 12.” Only some time after that, the news about the elections appeared on the TDH website.
