The water level in the Toktogul reservoir as of March 7 dropped to the lowest level in recent years – 8 billion 33 million cubic meters.
According to JSC Electric Stations, in March last year, the volume of water in the reservoir was 9.3 billion cubic meters, and in 2020 – 12.3 billion cubic meters.
Earlier, the Ministry of Energy predicted that by April 1, 2022, the volume of water in the reservoir would drop to 7 billion cubic meters. The minimum volume at which the Toktogul reservoir will simply stop working is a water level of 5 billion cubic meters.
In 2021, Kyrgyzstan has faced a massive energy crisis in recent years. Among the main reasons, the authorities name the period of low water in the region. Because of it, the Toktogul reservoir – the main source of electricity in the country – has a low water level.
