The German Ministry of Defense approved the supply of infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) to Ukraine from the stocks of the former GDR, which are now in the Czech Republic.
This is reported by the German publications Welt am Sonntag and Spiegel, citing their sources.
In particular, we are talking about 58 infantry fighting vehicles (PbV-501, formerly known as BMP-1), equipped with a cannon and machine guns.
BMPs were transferred to Sweden in the late 90s and then sold to a Czech company, which now wants to sell them to Ukraine. To do this, it was necessary to obtain the consent of Germany as the country of origin.
Earlier, according to publications, the German government blocked attempts to sell these BMPs to Ukraine, undertaken back in 2019. The government of Angela Merkel did not want to approve the decision, believing that it would interfere with dialogue with Russia. After a radical change in German policy with the start of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the government of Olaf Scholz still refused to talk about the supply of artillery or tanks.
