Ukrainian company DTEK has completed the installation of the country’s first industrial energy storage system and is proceeding with the commissioning of the plant.
The storage plant in Energodar, near the central city of Zaporizha, has a power capacity of 1 MW and an energy capacity of 2.25 Mwh.
Energy storage systems are aimed at accumulating, storing and delivering electricity to the grid and are viewed as key elements in creating modern, efficient power networks to ensure stable quality of electricity and energy security. They are in widespread use in a number of industrialised countries.
The U.S. company, Honeywell, supplied the lithium-ion energy storage system. A Canadian company, Sungrid, was a key contractor in testing the new facility.
“Despite the challenges we face due to the pandemic, DTEK is strictly adhering to the schedule. We have already completed the installation of the battery and connected it to the grid,” Emanuele Volpe, DTEK Chief Innovation Officer, said in a statement. “Now, we are carrying out commissioning works.”
Volpe said the pilot project would “make a great contribution to the transformation of the country’s energy sector as a whole” and called for improvements in Ukraine’s regulatory structures.
