The French Association of Champagne Producers has condemned a law passed in Russia that allows only sparkling wines made in Russia to be called “champagne,” UNIAN reported, citing Newsru.
French Agriculture Minister Julien Denormandi stressed that only French winemakers have the right to call their wines champagne.
“Imagine the reaction of our government. This word comes from the name of a beautiful region where champagne is produced,” he said.
The association said it was upset that the new law deprived Russian consumers of clear and unambiguous information about the origin and characteristics of wine.
Meanwhile, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian announced the reaction of Paris in the coming days to the situation, writes European Truth with reference to France24.
According to the minister, in case Russia violates the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO), France will take legal action against Moscow.
