In an interview with the Public Television of Armenia Russian Ambassador to Armenia Sergey Kopyrkin said that the Russian side continues efforts to help repatriate Armenian prisoners of war and other captives held in Azerbaijan.
He said to the best of his knowledge, which may be a little outdated, since November 2020, Russia has mediated the return of 81 Armenian prisoners of war and 16 Azerbaijani prisoners.
“The situation may have changed a little, but these figures indicate that one cannot say that this situation is being ignored or that there is no progress. Of course, we would like this issue to be resolved much more quickly. Initially, our principled position was, and it remains now, that it should be an exchange of “everyone for everyone”. But, unfortunately, it does not work out so quickly, therefore the efforts continue,” he said.
Kopyrkin noted that the commander of the Russian peacekeeping contingent deployed in Nagorno-Karabakh plays a very important role in this process, thanks to their contacts with the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides.
