In 2021, the growth of the economy of Kyrgyzstan is projected by 3.8 percent, and in 2022 – by 6.4 percent. This is stated on the official website of the IMF.
Nikoloz Gigineishvili, head of the fund’s mission in Kyrgyzstan, spoke to the IMF Country Focus bulletin about the impact of the pandemic on the economy and how the IMF has supported its recovery. He noted that Kyrgyzstan has been significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic resulted in an 8.6 percent decline in production in 2020, significant job losses and increased poverty.
Labor-intensive sectors of the economy were hit hardest. Tourism fell by nearly 80 percent. Transport, trade and construction have suffered significantly.
International Monetary Fund – “Inflation has increased from 3 percent in 2019 to about 10 percent in 2020, mainly due to currency depreciation and higher prices for imported food. Public debt increased by 16 percent to 68 percent of GDP, reflecting lower output, higher budget deficits and currency depreciation. The World Bank estimates that poverty has increased from 20 percent to 31 percent as incomes decline and unemployment rises, ”Nikoloz Gigineishvili said.
