Vahagn Khachaturian was elected President of Armenia following a secret ballot in the National Assembly. 71 deputies voted for him.
On the eve of the first round, the opposition factions refused to take part in the elections, which is why the ruling faction did not have enough votes to elect the nominated candidate. It required 81 votes in favor, while the ruling faction “Civil Contract” is represented by 71 deputies. In the second round, 64 votes “for” the candidate nominated by the ruling faction of the State Duma were enough.
Khachaturian served as Minister of High-Tech Industry.
The post of President of Armenia has been vacant since February 1, 2022, when the resignation of the 4th President of the Republic of Armenia Armen Sargsyan came into force. Earlier, in a statement dated January 23, Sargsyan announced his intention to leave this position due to the impossibility of influencing domestic and foreign policy processes regarding Armenia.
