The opposition ridiculed the idea of the Adjarian government to build an artificial island near Batumi, similar to the “palm island” in the United Arab Emirates.
Opposition representatives today held a rally near the Adjara government building – they brought balloons and palm branches with them and asked to hand them over to the Prime Minister.
The head of the Adjara government, Tornike Rizhvadze, on the air of Imedi TV on September 19 announced the idea of building an artificial island. This aroused public interest, although many decided that the ambitious project was only an election promise.
The protesters stated that the number of visitors to free canteens in the region is increasing daily, and the Batumi mayor’s office cannot cope with illegal buildings – the public is unsuccessfully trying to ban the construction of the 20-storey building of the Ambassador Hotel on the boulevard, and recently it became known that in the city without permission a complex of seven buildings is under construction.
