On the eve of the International Day against Nuclear Tests, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization adopted a Joint Statement “On the 30th Anniversary of the Closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site.” This was reported by MIA “Kazinform” with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The joint statement of the six CSTO countries noted the role of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan – Elbasy Nursultan Nazarbayev, whose decree closed the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site 30 years ago.
This historic step, according to the ministers, became an important milestone in promoting the idea of a universal ban on nuclear tests. The document emphasizes that the closure of the Semipalatinsk test site has given an important impetus to international efforts to establish a moratorium on nuclear tests around the world and the creation in 2006 of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in Central Asia.
