Several members of the council of elders “Bakai” on August 23 went to a rally in front of the government building. One of them, human rights activist Anvarbek Tolomushev, said that the council demands an immediate end to the GKNB’s interference in the affairs of the muftiate.

According to him, the State Committee for National Security intervened in the elections for the mufti, forcing seven candidates for this post to refuse to participate in them in favor of Zamir Rakiyev.

“Sultan Gapurov, who refused to do this, was tied up as a terrorist right at the door of the muftiate before the exam. The commission considered that he did not come. Thus, Rakiev became the only contender for the post of mufti,” said the elder.

Tolomushev demanded that the GKNB officers be brought to justice.

In addition, the human rights activist accused the head of the State Commission for Religious Affairs Toygonbai Abdykadyrov of “weaving intrigues and incompetence.” He said that the chairman of the State Committee for National Security, Kamchybek Tashiev, helped Abdykadyrov to come to this position.
