The Group of Seven (G7) warned Russia that its hypothetical invasion of Ukraine would have serious consequences and pay a high price.
“Russia should have no doubt that further military aggression against Ukraine will have large-scale consequences and a serious cost,” says the draft communiqué of the foreign ministers of the informal association, which includes Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Canada, the United States, France and Japan. …
The communiqué notes that the G7 “reaffirms its unshakable commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, as well as the right of any sovereign state to determine its future.” “We will strengthen our cooperation in developing a joint and comprehensive response,” it says. The G7 countries also condemned the alleged “concentration of Russian troops” on the border with Ukraine and “aggressive rhetoric” against the authorities in Kiev.
“We reaffirm our support for the efforts of France and Germany within the framework of the Normandy format to achieve full implementation of the Minsk agreements to resolve the conflict in eastern Ukraine,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, British Foreign Minister Elizabeth Truss, speaking at a press conference in Liverpool, once again warned of “big consequences” for Russia in the event of an allegedly planned invasion of Ukraine. “We have made it clear that any invasion will have significant consequences,” the British foreign minister said, adding that “the G7 wants Russia to renounce its aggression against Ukraine.” She added that all the G7 countries take a single position on the situation in Ukraine.
“We sent a very clear and unified message to [Russian President] Vladimir Putin from this G7 meeting, we want Russia to end its aggression against Ukraine,” the head of the Foreign Office said.
Answering a question from journalists about possible actions against Russia, Trass did not rule out the introduction of new sanctions against Moscow in the event that the situation on the Russian-Ukrainian border continues to remain tense. “We have carried out preparatory work on the application of economic sanctions against Russia. We are considering all options for action in this case,” the minister said.
