Judoka Zurab Zviadauri, winner of the 2004 Olympic Games and ex-parliamentarian from the ruling Georgian Dream party, was detained on murder charges.
40-year-old Zurab Zviadauri faces up to 15 years in prison, the Georgian Interior Ministry said.
The dramatic triple murder took place the previous evening near the village of Tsinandali, Telavi municipality, in the Kakheti region.
Zurab Zviadauri shot Nika Kenchoshvili, who had previously killed his brother, Zviad Zviadauri. Another person, Vasil Tsotskhalashvili, was killed during the shootout. Two more men were injured during the incident.
According to media reports, the conflict began over a facility under construction near the Tsinandal forest. According to this version, the Olympic champion, along with his brother and two persons accompanying them, was at a meeting, during which a verbal dispute began, which grew into a shootout.
During the skirmish, a Stechkin pistol and a Saiga-type semi-automatic firearm were used. The police seized the weapon at the crime scene.
