The prosecutor’s office of the city of Almaty confirmed the detention of the deputy of the city maslikhat Kairat Kudaibergen. According to the supervisory authority, he was detained on April 21 by an interdepartmental investigative-operational group led by special prosecutors on suspicion of organizing and participating in mass riots.
“Detained Kudaibergen Қ.Қ. placed in the temporary detention facility of the Almaty Police Department,” the prosecutor’s office informed.
A preliminary investigation established that Kairat Kudaibergen, together with Arman Dzhumageldiev (“Wild Arman”), “organized a gathering of people at the Kazakhstan Hotel, called for uniting around Dzhumageldiev, supporting him and putting forward common demands of the authorities, and also divided people into “cells” of 10 man and instructed to tie white armbands as a distinctive sign of their grouping. After that, according to the prosecutor’s office, the group assembled by Kudaibergen and Dzhumageldiev went to the square, where they tried to unite the protesters around Dzhumageldiev, organize an operational headquarters and put forward common demands to the authorities.
