About 500 people have already signed a petition demanding that they refuse to accept amendments that allow restricting access to social networks and instant messengers. A bill introducing such a possibility entered the Senate.
“According to the proposed amendments, social networks and messengers will be required to appoint “legal representatives” who are obliged to remove any content within 24 hours at the request of the authorized body (MA) represented by the Ministry of Information and Public Development (MIOR). If the social network does not follow the requirements of the MA, then it has the right to “restrict its activities on the territory of Kazakhstan,” the authors of the petition note .
“The authors of the amendments argue that such an innovation is necessary to protect children from cyberbullying. But the noble cause is apparently just a cynical cover for the desire to establish greater control over the Internet and increase censorship.”
