On September 13, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed the law “On ensuring the seismic safety of the population and the territory of the Republic of Uzbekistan.”
The document was adopted by the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis on June 15 and approved by the Senate on July 31. The law will come into force in 6 months.
About 78% of the territory of Uzbekistan is located in seismically active regions, where earthquakes of magnitude 6 and higher on the MSK-64 scale regularly occur.
Therefore, there is a need to improve the legislative framework for ensuring the seismic safety of the population and the territory of the country, defining the powers in this direction of the responsible state bodies and developing specific mechanisms for preparing for strong earthquakes and eliminating their consequences.
