For the first time, Russian President Vladimir Putin held telephone talks with the new German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who replaced Angela Merkel on December 8. The politicians discussed Moscow’s proposed guarantees for joint security with NATO, as well as the situation in Ukraine and the implementation of the Minsk agreements, according to the Kremlin’s official website.
“Vladimir Putin informed about Russian proposals for long-term, legally enshrined security guarantees, excluding any further NATO advance to the east, as well as the deployment of strike weapons systems in countries adjacent to Russia”, –it says in the message.
Earlier, Scholz called for the activation of the “Normandy format” for a peaceful settlement of the situation in Ukraine. He announced a “new activity” on the border with Ukraine and stressed that Europe will not put up with this.
