At the plenary session in Strasbourg, the European Parliament approved the report of the Lithuanian MP Andrius Kubilius with an appeal to the EU authorities to reconsider relations with Russia. The author previously referred to it as a report on the Cold War with Russia. 494 deputies supported the approval of the document, 103 were against, 72 more abstained, writes TASS.
Report author recommendedthe EU authorities and its member states to review the EU policy towards Russia and develop a comprehensive strategy based on the principles presented in the report. In particular, it is proposed as measures to “counter the threat to security” and fight against Russian interference in the affairs of the EU and the countries of the Eastern Partnership, conduct “selective dialogue with the Kremlin” and “support a democratic society.”
In addition, the EU countries should be ready not to recognize the results of the upcoming elections to the State Duma if violations of democratic procedures and international law are revealed during them. The decisions of the European Parliament are advisory in nature and are not binding on the EU countries.
