The agreement signed by the oil ministers of Iran and Azerbaijan following a meeting between Ayatollah of Iran Seyed Ebrahim Raisi and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev provides for the supply of 1.5-2 billion cubic meters of gas to Azerbaijan annually.
The swap agreement (agreement on the SWAP system, or “exchange”) means that not Turkmen, but Iranian gas will physically enter Azerbaijan. Turkmenistan will supply gas to Iran, and Iran will transfer the same amount of its fuel to Azerbaijan. Such a scheme is used when there is no infrastructure for direct delivery.
According to Day.Az, Aliyev commented on the signing of the document as follows: “This is a historical document. It shows once again how deep the Iranian-Azerbaijani ties are. Azerbaijan will receive Turkmen gas through Iran. This is an excellent basis for trilateral cooperation, testifying to our intentions.”
